TRENDS IN JEWELRY

Trends. They change. They almost have to by definition. Specifically, in the fashion industry, trends are meant to change so that each brand can come out with a new season of styles and the ones from the previous season are suddenly considered an abomination. This planned obsolescence is the cornerstone of the fashion industry… but let’s not get too negative. Trends are fun! It’s exciting to try and start them, it’s fun to get ahead of them, and it’s fun to actively go against them.

Today we will take a look at two jewelry trends most prevalent in 2019.

STACKING – IN

When it comes to jewelry, more is becoming better. Although stacking earrings is not a new trend, the jewelry world is starting to see this trend becoming more and more popular with people of all ages. Even a more conservative customer that would have at one time been fearful of multiple piercings is finding themselves experimenting with multiple piercings and ear cuffs.

This stacking trend is not just limited to earrings either. Necklaces, bracelets, and rings are all fair game as well, and many brands are pushing this trend with their imagery and digital advertising. Of course, as with anything, there is a right and wrong way to do things and stacking can absolutely get out of hand if done incorrectly. It’s good to keep in mind that if you are going to stack try and stay in a similar color story if you are incorporating color, and add a variety of textures and sizes to your stack to keep things interesting.

COLORS – IN

Color back, watch out 70’s! It’s time to start breaking away from your comfort zone of just silver, or plain gold, and rose gold accents, start sprinkling some color into your accessories. Bold colors are in as far as precious gems and colored enamel. Of course, as always a hodgepodge of color is never the answer, but a hand-picked and well-curated selection of various shades and tons can go a long way.

In conjunction with stacking, color can really add another level of depth to your accessories. Mixing metals and mixing colored gemstones can add a wonderful pop of life to your ring game as well as your earring game. Find what works for you, and start working around it. Collect color stories of jewelry just like you collect color stories in clothing and start spicing up the game.

BIRTHSTONES – OUT

While I know that I just spent a couple of paragraphs talking about how important color is in 2019, I will make certain to point out that birthstones are out. Fashion is about choice and birthstones are an arbitrary assignment of color that you don’t need to follow. Where whatever you want and whatever fits with your outfit and style, don’t get held up in random gemstones you may not even like.

PERSONALIZATION – OUT

When putting your name or your birthday or “BEST FRIENDS” on jewelry was a new technology that was easily accessible, people got excited… maybe a little too excited and now we are seeing this trend on its way out. Instead of writing something specific on your jewelry, find something symbolic that means a lot to you or someone else. Charms are back in for bracelets, and necklaces, and earrings and those can be so much more meaningful than just a date you already know.

Of course, all of these trends are just opinions by one person, but if you start to do your research you will notice this among brands as well. For example, take a look at Lark & Berry and look through their collections, you will see the imagery that aligns with our stacking and color theory.

In the end, it’s all about what you love, so jump in or stay in your own fashion line, the choice is yours… and that’s the best part!
